During the installation of Quicken 2004 I kept getting the following error
message. "Quicken is unable to find one or more essential files. You must
uninstall quicken then install Quicken again to continue".

My operating system is Windows XP. My Quicken 2004 installation was an
upgrade from Quicken 2003.

I did six uninstall and reinstall cycles (three with the help of a Quicken
technician) and kept getting the same unable to find the essential files
message.

The problem was that the following files mfc70.dll, msvcp70.dll, and
msvcr70.dll, left over from earlier versions of Quicken that had been
installed on my computer, remained in the c:\windows\system32 folder even
after the Quicken uninstall.

The solution was to go to the directory where Quicken 2004 installed and
locate these files mfc70.dll, msvcp70.dll, and msvcr70.dll and copy them to
the c:\windows\system32 directory.

Quicken 2004 will now run successfully.

These 3 files are also required in the windows/system32 directory to
sync pkt qkn w/2004. I did not have any problems w/installation but was
unable to sync following upgrade. FAQ at landware site indicated that
this was the problem.

I have the exact same problem when installing Quicken 2004. I made sure that
I copied these 3 files from the c:\quickenw folder into the windows\system32
folder prior the next attempt of an installation, but I still get the
"Quicken is unable to find one or more essential files" error message.
I cannot complete a succesful installation. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dan
