Can someone with an associate degree in accounting call themselves an accountant in the US?

Sadly, anyone can call themselves an accountant. The term accountant is not regulated and does not even require any accounting degree, experience or other qualifications that a "qualified" accountant needs to fulfil.

Getting a job AS an accountant on the other hand tends to require a basic level of competency in the field....

Certainly Yes to bklynboy reply. But see, in US the equivalent to a Chartered Accountant is called a Certified Public Accountant (CPA.), officially
