Backup Problem in Quicken 2011

    I'm running Quicken 2011 Premier, Release R 8(20.1.8.6). I backup my
qdf file to my hard drive every couple of days, then copy the backup
    to a thumb drive.

Today, for the first time, the backup failed. I get the message
"Unable to open source file." When I click OK, I then get the message
"Quicken cannot open the data file because it is in use by some other
application. Please close that application and try again."

Clicking OK then gets me the message "Unable to re-load current file
    after copy."

Clicking File, and then my checked qdf file, then reloads the file
    without a problem.

I've shut down Quicken and tried again, but exactly the same thing
    happens.

Anyone know what might be wrong and how to correct it?

Are you using Avira's anti-virus product?

Their latest major update (Service Pack 2, they called it), released in
the past week or so, has introduced a timing problem which presents
itself by applications receiving a "sharing violation" status when they
try to open some files, some times. It's entirely random, but I found
that once it started on any particular file, it would continue on
    repeated retries.

Turning off the "ProActiv" heuristic is the most recently suggested fix.

Thanks for the suggestion, but no, I use NOD32.

However, NOD32 had something turned on in Advanced Setup called
Advanced Heuristics (whatever that is). Following your suggestion, I
turned that off, and it solved the problem. Thanks again!

The backup completed without a problem, but I was left with the
(minor) part of the problem that I've had for several weeks now: When
the backup finishes, I then get the message "Quicken cannot open the
data file because it is in use by some other application. Please close
    that application and try again."

Clicking OK then gets me the message "Unable to re-load current file
    after copy."

Clicking File, and then my checked qdf file, then reloads the file
without a problem, so it's a slight nuisance, but not really much of a
    problem.

As a quick check, try TEMPORARILY completely disabling your AntiVirus
    and see what happens.

My spouse has been chewing my ear off with a problem she has backing up
her genealogy ("TMG" program) databases, since about June 26. Something
like file in use by another program. Turning off the heuristics thingy
didn't help completely, but turning of Avira temporarily may have. I
will keep monitoring this thread for more solutions. Any advice as to
how exactly to report this to Avira?

First, register at http://forum.avira.com/wbb/. Then visit the forum for
the product you're using (probably AV Premium or AV Premium Security Suite)
where you'll find lots of people with the same problem.

For reasons that I don't understand, once registered you'll be able to make
new posts of your own, but you can't comment on others until you've been
granted "Community Member" status which you get by applying through the
    "Usergroups" tab of your profile.

They'll probably ask you to report your problem formally via

    http://www.avira.com/en/support-phonesupport-for-consumer

They'll ask for a system info report from you which you get by downloading
    and running the "Support Collector."

  8. Forgive the question but ... you have rebooted your system? Because
in my experience, windows sometimes marks a file busy when it's not,
and then reboot is the only fix I know about.

No, that's NOT the problem here ...

Another possibility is if you have a continuous backup program running. I found
when I have Memeo (came with an external drive) running, I can open and read
email messages in Thunderbird, but I can't delete them.

Thanks to both of you, but with Bert Hyman's help, the problem was
solved yesterday (see my last message in this thread).

    Ken,
I have the same issue. I'm running Quicken 2011 Home and Business Release 8
(20.1.8.6). My message that just started early in the week reads something
to the effect.. "launcher cannot run.." then it shuts down. I run AVG.
This has nothing to do with a virus software running.
This issue continued even after I rebooted several times.
This issue occurred because of an update issued by Quicken.
    My issued resolved itself today.

I've shut down Quicken and tried again, but exactly the same thing

Anyone know what might be wrong and how to correct it?

I'm running Quicken 2011 Home and Business Release 8 (20.1.8.6) on
Win7 Pro, and get the same errors, but not consistently. I use MS
Security Essentials for AV. I believe mine has to do with sync
running. I use SugarSync to sync a few computers.

I suppose I could turn off the sync to see if that resolves it, but as
I said, it's not consistent. I'll try to remember to turn it off
before closing each time for a few weeks, and see if that has an
    effect.
