Quicken Registration/Activation Question

    Hello All!

    I am writing to ask if anyone here knows if Quicken is still using the
    same old activation process they have in the past. Most software
    programs have a key on the CD jacket that you can use anytime you
    reinstall it. But with Quicken 98 (and at least a few versions later)
    anytime I needed to change my computer or hard drive and reinstall
    Quicken, I had to call them to get a new code key unique to a newly
    generated serial number. Some of you are familiar with this somewhat
    awkward task. Well, Intuit has discontinued all support for Quicken 98
    (my version), and now as I migrate to a new faster computer, I will not
    be able to take Quicken 98 with me. I have no reason to buy Quicken
    2005 other than this. Quicken 98 worked just fine - a check book is a
    checkbook - it printed my checks and it imported my credit card
    statement with no problem. I'm a little angry with Quicken that I'll
    be forced to buy something I already bought - even though it was 6+
    years ago (it's not supposed to be a magazine subscription - LOL!).
    When you buy most software, it is yours for as long as it is compatible
    with your operating system.

    Anyway - if anyone can briefly let me know how activation works in the
    newest Quicken (2005), it will be greatly appreciated. If it is
    remotely the same system, I will not buy Quicken again. It's just not
    right. I don't want to learn a new system (MS Money) and start all new
    memorized transactions, etc., but I'm so aggravated with them.

    I am located in the U.S., if that matters. I've read there are
    differences in the Canadian version.

  2. That is the only way they can get some people to upgrade at all I guess. I
    remember a key in Quicken 2000 and I thought that was because I had upgraded
    to deluxe after they took away something I had had in the past under the
    Quicken Basic package. I've had Q 2001 Deluxe and Q2004 Deluxe since then
    and they don't have a key code that I am aware of.

    ....in case anyone else has the same problem, I'm pasting the solution
    here. This answer works for migration issues, so if you have Q98, make
    sure you backup up your Quicken.ini file on a disk or CD somewhere, in
    case your hard drive ever fails. Without the registration information
    contained in your original Quicken.ini file, activation after
    reinstallation might be close to impossible (since Quicken will no
    longer readily support Q98 activation issues). I want to thank Arun
    for the concise instructions I'm pasting in below:

    "It is possible to migrate Quicken 98 from older machine to new
    machine, if you wish. After installing Q98 on new machine, copy file
    C:\WINDOWS\QUICKEN.INI from old machine to new machine. This file
    contains the so called activation information for Q98. This would
    trick Q98 on new machine to think that it is already activated."

    If replacing the entire Quicken.ini file doesn't work, cutting and
    pasting the registration section of the old file into the file
    established upon reinstallation will work also.
