Can anyone explain the use of Line 12a on an employee's W-2?
Mine has a $635 amount entered. The IRS explanation mentions
    tips--I am not a "tipped" employee. I couldn't understand
the IRS' explanation other than this...?

Talk to your payroll department - they put it there. Or tell
us what code is entered on that line?

This line is not from the IRS it is from your employer.
Usually code D is for a pretax retirement payment, eg. 401K.

Every item in Box 12 requires a code that could be any
letter between A and W. See the following link for an
explanation of each of those codes:

Box 12a should have a letter and an amount.

What letter is in box 12a?

If you look at the back of the W-2 in the fine print section
for box 12, what does it say for the letter in box 12?

Boxes 12a,b,c&d need a code in them. This tells you what the
figure is for. If the code is D. This would be for a 401K
    deduction.

    12a & 14

    Hello,

    I am filing a 1040.

    On my W2 in line 12a I have: E 4555.39
And in line 14 I have: CELL 140.00

Where do I apply these on my 1040A?

    Thank you for your help.
