We originally issued and filed a 1099 with an amount that was too high. The related red copies (1099 Copy A and 1096) have already been sent to the IRS. Amount on the 1099 should have been $1500 but was issued and filed as $1700. I have issued the payer a new 1099 Copy B for $1500. I know I need to now print a Red Copy A for $1500 and check the "corrected" box at the top of the 1099 Copy A. My question is about the 1096 to file with the corrected Copy A... There is a lot of conflicting information on the internet as to the amount I should include on the 1096 and the IRS website does not address it. Do I print the 1096 with an amount of $1500 (this makes the most sense to me)? Or do I print the 1096 with an amount of $-200, the difference between the correct amount $1500 and the correct amount $1700 (as some sites have suggested)?
