Add Custom Field to Customer Payment Screen?

I keep books for a nonprofit that solicits donations from businesses and
individuals. We invoice people who make pledges, and are happy to take
checks from anyone who wants to respond to one of our campaigns.

I need to capture the number of the donor's check so I can include it in the
acknowledgment letter for IRS tax purposes. I figured out how to add a
custom field, "Paid by Check Number", to the Customer record and successfully
added that to the Cash Sale form, which is what I use to input ad hoc
donations. I want to add the field to my Customer Payment screen form as
well, but I can't find that field when I try to Modify Layout.

Any hints?
