USA Adding a building

Hello out there,
I have a question about how to adding material for a building to be built for the company I am working with.
The owner purchased the materials to build a shop out of his own personal cash and paid himself back with a check.
The building will not be completed till next year, so can I account for the expense of the purchase for the material this year and how do I make the entry?
