adjusted basis calculation for selling house



I am looking at pub 523 for 2003, on page 8. It lists
improvements that can be used to calculate adjusted basis
(which then is used to calculate your cost basis). These are
some items, and my comments:

Bedroom addition Ok, I expected that.
Patio addition Ok, that makes sense.
landscaping Wow, does that mean that lemon tree
I planted last year is eligible?
How about the removal of the old cedar
How about those new rose bushes?
New Fence I just replaced my fence, so that is
New roof I had assumed that was replacement,
not an improvement? Wall to Wall Carpet
Wow, this is not just a replacement?

This list is much more liberal than I had assumed. Am I
reading this correctly?
