I am filing my American taxes manually, using Form 1040. I would like to receive my refund via direct deposit.

Line 20d is for my account number. The problem is, there are 17 boxes but my account number is only 10 digits! I'm worried if I enter it wrongly, my deposit will be displaced. I live overseas as a nomad without an address. So I can't be reached by postal mail.

What should I do about the empty boxes? Should I align my number to the left or right? Should I add trailing 0's?

Thanks!

"The account number can be up to 17 characters (both numbers and letters). Include hyphens but omit spaces and special symbols. Enter the number from left to right and leave any unused boxes blank."

Above is from IRS instructions.
