Altered downloads from brokers

When I download from a broker a stock not previously held in a Quicken
account, Quicken shows correct information in the "Online Center" but
upon hitting the Compare button, the security information is altered
to Bond bought, rather than a stock; the number of shares is changed
accordingly and it is entered as "Unidentified Security" in the
Transaction List. Any idea what is happening and how to stop it?

Check how your stock is listed. Normally the EXACT wording has to be used.
When I first started having problems like that, I allowed Quicken to
download in the name it wanted and then change my previously self entered
stock to the same as Quicken had. You should be able to match them up, but
I never could get it to work right.

I once had 2 mutual funds where the names were similar except one
had -energy after it and the other had -medical. This was in a .QIF file,
but I had to go in every time and change it because the financial
institution was not putting enough information in the .QIF.

It never gets to that point, although before this problem started (it
seems to have started with the program update last Jan. or Feb.) I
could use Quicken's wording as you say. Now when I hit the "Compare
to list" button on the Online Center screen, the Register appears with
the new downloaded items at the bottom but with the name of the
never-before registered stock changed to "Unidentified Security".
Then when I "Accept" the item (there is not much choice), it is
entered into the Register as a bond still with the "Unidentified
Security" in the name box and the number of shares divided by 10 as it
would be with a bond buy.
Weird and frustrating especially with requiring all the manual
correcting.

It is not clear how you are determing that the security name has
been changed. Where *in Quicken* do you see the correct name
for the security?
Then when I "Accept" the item (there is not much choice),
"Delete" is not offerred as a choice?

Do you now have a security in your Security List called
"Unidentified Security". If so, you probably accepted a
downloaded transaction with that name in it sometime in the
past. You may be able to modify the name Unidentified Security
to the correct name and have future downloaded transactions
match correctly. But ...

I am not certain of this, but you may have to delete all the
existing transactions for (or that were for) "Unidentified
Security", and re-enter them manually with the correct name,
then get rid of the Unidentified Security in the Security List.
Then next time you download, either the downloaded name should
match the correct name in Quicken, or if there is some
difference in the spelling, Quicken should ask you which
existing security to match the name to. (When/if you get the
dialog box asking about the security name to match to - or add;
read it very carefully or you could easily make the wrong
choice).
