Alternative to E*TRADE

Porter Smith

I'm one of the lucky HarrisDirect customers who just had his accounts taken
over by E*TRADE. I can't get it work with Quicken, the explanatory email
that was supposed to be sent by 1/13 never arrived and I can't get them to
answer the phone.

Can anyone recommend another online brokerage that works well with Quicken?

Fidelity, among others.

Works fine here. If it hasn't scrolled off the page, take a look below
for my earlier post called "E*TRADE HARRISdirect Transition."

I saw your post (thanks) and followed the instructions. Didn't work. Says
my account number and/or PIN is invalid. But they conform to E*TRADE's
rules. BTW in that packet of info they sent me they said they'd send an
eMail on setting up Quicken on 1/13. Still waiting.

I've been trying to call E*TRADE all morning but either get cut off after
a second of the elevator music, or get a recording that the call cannot
be completed. Once I managed to get into the queue but after 43 minutes
of "your call is important to us" I got a busy signal.

I never had this problem with DLJ Direct/CSFB/HarrisDirect. I always got
to speak with a human.

If this is an example of their customer service I'm taking my money
somewhere else.

I'll second the nomination of Fidelity. My wife and I have 7 different
accounts with them and problems are extremely rare (last problem was
..... I forget).

I use Schwab and it works just fine - The $9.95 commission is nice too!

I do also. Scottrade doesn't yet have their Quicken act together.

I do direct downloads from Scottrade to Quicken. Trades work just fine.
But I have to manually enter cash transactions. Not perfect, but not
the end of the world....

Margaret

I had no problems with the conversion and the Quicken Interface is
working. I just deactivated the Account as Harrisdirect and
reactivated it as E*Trade, put in my Accounting Number and Pin. Simple
as that.

I also have Ameritrade which works fine - I just don't like there
statement presentation. BrownCo has been good, but they are now owned
by E*Trade. Schwab is good, but I left them for BrownCo when Schwab was
messing with Fees and Commissions - they lost a 21 year customer.

It keeps telling me my customer id or PIN is invalid, yet they work fin on
the E*TRADE web site.

But what really ticks me off is that I have been trying to call them all
F***ing day and they don't answer the phone. If this is the level of
service I can expect I'm going elsewhere.

I guess they are swamped. A looong time back I had to call Customer
Service and the call was taken promptly and efficiently.

On your Account General Information does it show Harrisdirect? If it
does you need to goto Online Services and Deactivate Transaction
Download. Accept Quickens response. Exit the Account for good
measure. Reopen the Account, goto Online Services and hit Activate
Transaction Download. Search for E*TRADE, and continue by entering
your Harrisdirect Login ID (not your Harrisdirect Account Number) and
PIN.

Note if you can log into the E*TRADE Web, you can change your Login ID
to something more meaningful. Hope this helps.

And yes, I did not receive the December information (where I had an
option not to convert my account - until the day before the
transistioned) and I have not received my Quicken download instructions
either....

We received our new account number and password info in a timely manner,
even though we had closed all our accounts at Harrisdirect in Sept-early
Oct. and had let them know ahead of time by letter any misuse of our info
would be solely due to their negligence or carelessness and that we
rejected all terms and conditions of E(vil)*Trade's CUA (and also that that
was the main reason we had closed all of our accounts at Harrisdirect).

I finally figured it out. My Harris id (which was my dljDirect & Credit
Suisse/First Boston id) was 6 characters long. E*TRADE mandates a
minimum of 8 characters. Even though I was able to logon the E*TRADE web
site with this short userId, it was rejected when Quicken tried to
connect. (I'm guessing there are two different validation routines. One
does simple syntax check before searching the database.)

Once I changed my userId to 8 characters, everything worked.

I finally spoke to a manager. He told me that despite the ton of info they
sent out telling Harris folks how to logon to E*TRADE, they received
hundreds of calls from Harris customers who didn't know what to do.

And they have a set of instructions on what to change in Quicken/Money.
It's supposed to be sent today (1/19)
