Ameritrade weirdness - 1 for 1 split

D

Don Awalt

Every time I download transactions now, Ameritrade reports a "1 for 1
split" (I am using Money 2007). It is for my Money Market/Sweep account,
"MMDA1".

I got through the steps to accept it,
then if I run a download transactions again, in 1 minute or next day,
it's there again. And no transaction shows up when I check for that. I
have run Quick File Repair, but I have had no other weird problems for a
long time.

If I check Ameritrade's account, they show a transaction on Oct 31
"Receive and Deliver (MMDA1) for an amount of 0.00.

Anyone seen this, or know how to stop it?

Don,

I've deselected Ameritrade in my update list for this very reason. I
am manually entering transactions for this account going forward.

Don,

Same here. MMDA1 split 1 for 1

However when I go to verify the split I get an error message that
says: "The stock split could not be completed due to a lack of
disk space."

If I change over to "Accounts List" in Money, under the "To Review"
column, it shows a link "Transactions to read: 1" I can right click on
that link and select "Delete Statement" to clear it.

If I run the Online Update it just keeps returning.

I think that until Ameritrade figures out what's causing this I might
take JB's suggestion and deselect Ameritrade from Online Updates.

I don't have experience with it, but I have some ideas on how to
deal with it.

If MMDA1 is their bank sweep option, the ideal would be to let them
solve the problem for you by changing your sweep fund to a real MMF.
If the won't do that for you, or you don't want to request it, I
have some ideas on how to possibly work around it. I would like to
know what kind of investment Money thinks it is. Does Money consider
it to be a MMF? Money does not expect to be handling splits on a
MMF.

Cal,

Thanks for offering to help. Hope you don't mind my providing the
following while we await Don's reply to your post.

The MMDA1 is TD Ameritrade's new FDIC-insured Money Market Deposit
Account and held with TD Bank. While they should be treating it as
cash, they are treating it as a security such that downloads into Money
want to create a corresponding investment.

Thanks again,
JB

It would be interesting to see the relevant OFX file stuff regarding
it.

On of the possibilities for workaround, if the situation calls for
it, would be to tell Money it is a mutual fund rather than Money
Market Fund. That can be tricky to do once the determination was
made.

On the other hand, if you restored a backup from before that started
to a new filename (perhaps called AMTD_Test.mny) you could try
calling it a mutual fund on first download. If that makes things
work better, we can work on what it takes to make the change on an
existing file where the type was previously established.

Also, I wonder if they will be sending the Buy and Sell
transactions, or if they will just send the Interest/Dividend
transaction monthly.

I prefer to get Buy and Sell downloads, but both ways work fine.
Many prefer to not see the buys and sells. With buy and sell
transactions, Money can actually give an indication of the yield.
The resolution is not as much as I would wish, but it is usable in
these days of better yields.

That 1:1 split thing may be the big (and hopefully temporary)problem
here.

Bingo! You guys are geniuses!

After reading the thread, I went in and checked, and Money had defaulted
to it being a Stock. So I changed it to a mutual fund, did two updates,
and no transaction anymore! And the balance seems correct (although I
can verify that tomorrow to be sure, but it looks right (at least the
MMA is right for sure, not sure about other stocks).

Nice job in detective work!!

How did you change it to being a mutual fund?

Money 2007 can do that directly. Earlier versions are more difficult
to pull that off.

As a PS, I had sent an email to Ameritrade from their site (I suggest
others do the same to apply pressure to fix it), and they replied as
follows:

The transaction that you are viewing is your funds being moved into the
Money Market account. I apologize for this inconvenience. This is a
known issue at this time with the way that your Money Market
transactions download into Money, and our technical department is
working to resolve this as soon as possible. We appreciate your
patience as we work to correct this for you.
