Any deductions for funeral expenses?

My husband passed away this year. Are any of the expenses involved
with his death and funeral deductible?

He died in February. I am able to file a joint return for 2009,
correct?

This has been a tough year. Any help would be appreciated.

My condolences to you.

The costs of his final medical expenses are deductible on Form 1040
Schedule A Line 1, where they might or might not provide an actual
tax benefit.

The funeral and cemetery costs are deductible only on the estate tax
return, and only if the gross estate exceeds $3.5 million.

Estate taxes are not an issue. Thank you for the reply.

Arthur,

What if the estate is in a state which has a lower estate tax minimum (e.g.
NY)?

Good point. I have not addressed the various and quite different
state and local taxes on inheritences and estates.

Thanks, but my husband did not have anything close to being over the
estate tax limit for Federal or for State (MA). I guess I was just
hoping that some of the expenses of his death might be deductible. I
didn't really think they would be but thought it was worth asking the
experts.

Thank you for your help.

It would be good to get help with your taxes this year if you are not
used to filling out the various forms.
