Backup Restore Problem

I use Money 2005 version 14.0.120.730. Having just reformatted my hard drive,
reloaded Money, having made two separate backups before this of the .mny file
and two of the normal .mny file, but am unable to restore either of them.
None are read-only.
When I open the .mny file it requests my password which, after I enter it,
the message appears " Money will convert your file so that you can work with
it in this version" After clicking next the following appears " Money cannot
locate filename or cannot open it, possibly because it is a read-only file or
you do not have permission to change it or your disk drive is
write-protected. If you have chosen the correct file and it cannot be
accessed, you will need to click OK and then restore your most recent backup
file.
If the file is being used by another application, close it in the other
application and click OK to try again."
The same applies to the backup file except it does not reach the conversion
part.
Any advice would be most welcome.

Either open the sample.mny file in your install folder, or let
Money 2005 create a new Money file, clicking Decline in the
process. It will do an update. Close Money. Then open Money and
check that Help->About... says you then have version 14.0.120.1105.

Then you should be able to open or restore your existing files.

Just having read Nicky's post looks as though we have the same problem. Just
tried
Bob's suggestion but no update took place. With Carl's suggestion, it seems
as both Nicky and I do not see the Online Privacy and Security screen in
order to Decline.

It's not a privacy screen. It is a Passport screen.

Just open the sample.mny file by double-clicking in Windows Explorer
if creating a new temporary file is at all troublesome.

If you STILL don't have success, note the additional suggestions in
response to Nicky.

but Thanks Carl, that latest suggestion to Nicky worked with a twist.
I created a new user, altered the security setting and set up a new file.
The upgrade downloaded but would not install. So I switched back to the
default user, altered the security setting to default and then the upgrade
installed straight away. All is now working ok.
