Bank downloads problem

G

Gordon

I have recently upgraded to Quicken 2014 and now have a few problems
with my bank downloads. The process goes as expected for most of my
bank transactions but frequently there will be one or two transactions
that the download process skips over. It is as if Quicken was blind to
these transactions.

I'm thinking that I may have made some errors in something like my
category list or some other settings that cause these transactions to
be invisible to Quicken.

I can open my bank account information on my web browser on-line
connection and print out a copy of the recent transactions, then go
back to Quicken and manually key the missing transactions in. The
running balance will then agree with the bank statement.

What could I try that might get this problem resolved. Thanks, Gordon

Look forward to an answer. This started with me when I went from 2010 to
2013. When this happens they usually will download if I initiate the
download from within the web browser rather than through One Step
Update. It's the direct connect that skips them. I also get duplicate
downloads in several of my accounts since switching to Q 2013.

nice to know - that it gets worse with the versions....
running Q2012, and no probs -
will only upgrade when "sunset" happens.
so I can look forward to probs in 2015 version -

I suspect the problem I'm having with this is that I made some kind of
error in the renaming rules but I don't know how to look these up and
correct my errors.

My bank uses a string of numbers and alphabet characters to identify
the transactions in my account. See sample below...

POS PURCHASE (ATT CONS PHONE PMT DALLAS TX)(000000778304 001 May

Then when I do an on-line update of my Quicken data files I have to
rename these bank transactions. I suspect that I've renamed some of
these transactions such that my Quicken simply ignores them. Does this
sound right? Gordon

I don't think renaming, or renaming rules, are your problem.

There are a couple of possibilities, but I would start with something known
as "Transfer Detection". Transfer Detection is a relatively new Quicken
feature that wants to help you identify "transfer" transactions, and to link
(while processing downloaded transactions) two separate Quicken transactions
into a regular Quicken "transfer transaction". While Quicken can often
correctly identify two separate transactions as a transfer ... it also
incorrectly identifies some transaction pairs as a transfer.

So (in my opinion): you can't allow Quicken to "automatically" create
transfers for you ... but you can allow Quicken to tell you when it thinks
it has found a pair of transactions that should be a transfer, then allow
you to confirm whether the pair really are a transfer.
See: Edit > Preferences > Transfer Detection.
Make sure you do not have "Automatically create transfers ..." checked; I
have found "Confirm possible transfers ..." to be safe and helpful, but you
can turn Transfer Detection off altogether, if you like.

If Transfer Detection is not the cause of your "missing" transactions, post
back.

Thanks, John, for your help. I don't have any problems with transfers.
That is, my bank will transfer funds from my checking account to my
VISA account, automatically, at the end of each month, then when I do
my Quicken downloads update this transfer process comes through and
shows up in my Quicken account information as it should.

The problem I'm having is that some entries that were made to my
checking account as an automatic deposit or withdrawal, such as my
autopays to my household natural gas company and some of my regular
deposits such as payment for oil well production where I own a tiny
fraction of the mineral rights won't show up in my Quicken files until
I go to my bank's website then on to my account and get the
information, then go back to Quicken and key this information in
manually. Once I've done this, my Quicken file shows the same running
balance that my bank account web site shows and all is okay until the
end of the next month when these same things won't download from my
bank into my Quicken file. Quicken will show the little blue dot
beside the Bank Account in the left column but when I open that to a
full page in Quicken the blue dot disappears and the new item(s) are
not shown on my Quicken bank account screen.

Most of my bank activity items do download into Quicken as expected.
My checks and on-line payments of bills all come through okay but two
or three of those autodeposit items don't. Gordon

renamed correctly started being renamed wrong, often with bizarre
results. I hadn't done anything to the renaming rules. Express Scrips
got renamed Liberty Mutual, picking up on the location include in the
transaction info. Been trying to fix these for months, but sometimes
they still rename wrong.

I also get a lot of zero amount transactions. Apparently Q13 finds that
there is too much info in one entry to be just a single transaction so
it sometimes adds one or two zero amount transactions immediately
following. The payee is usually a non sense string of characters.

Again...all started with Q13 deluxe.

It's possible that you missed the meaning of my previous reply.

When the Quicken preference to "automatically create transfers ..." is on,
and Quicken mistakenly identifies a downloaded transaction as being one half
of a transfer pair, and links it to the other half of the "transfer": it may
cause you to think the transaction was not downloaded.

Similarly, if you do an "Accept All" without making sure that every
downloaded transaction with a "Match" status, is a true match (and is
matched to the correct register transaction), you may think a transaction
was not downloaded, when it was.

The same is true, if you use the "Automatically add transactions to
register" option. And the fact that you describe seeing the small blue orb
icon, suggests to me you may have that option turned on. Which means that
Quicken may have incorrectly "matched" your "missing" downloaded transaction
to an existing register transaction, causing you to think that the "missing"
transaction was never downloaded. I believe you should try turning off "auto
add to register" to see whether your "missing" transactions begin to show
up.

But first, tell Quicken to display the "Status" column in the account
register (click the small gear-wheel icon just above the vertical slider and
put a check mark alongside "Status"). When the Status column is displayed,
you will see icons in that column telling you which transactions were
manually entered (pencil icon), which were entered by Reminders (calendar
icon), and which were downloaded (blue orb icon - either by itself for a New
transaction, or overlaying the pencil or calendar icon for a Match
transaction). Matched transactions could contain your "missing" downloaded
transactions.

If you are 100% certain that none of the above are involved with your
"missing" transactions, the next steps are more work ... to describe and to
do. So I'll wait until you've ruled out the other possibilities above.

of a transfer pair, and links it to the other half of the "transfer": it may
cause you to think the transaction was not downloaded.
If the transaction had downloaded wouldn't the Quicken balance be the
same as my bank shows? This is what first gets my attention, then I
start looking for transactions that didn't download.
Similarly, if you do an "Accept All" without making sure that every
downloaded transaction with a "Match" status, is a true match (and is

Here, again, wouldn't this cause my Quicken ending balance to be
different than what my bank shows on their web site?

I've had the status bar checked and I see nothing in the leftmost
column where this information should be. Maybe something shows up
momentarily, as the download is in progress.
If you are 100% certain that none of the above are involved with your
"missing" transactions, the next steps are more work ... to describe and to
do. So I'll wait until you've ruled out the other possibilities above.
I think we need to move on into this. I can cope with the problem but
would like to get it resolved if it isn't to formidably difficult.

Is there a book available on the setup processes for Quicken. I think
I could get this problem resolved if I had a book or manual that would
explain some of the basic setup procedures to me. Gordon
