Business Name Registration Necessary?

Fred Finisterre

Hi,

I've recently set-up a limited company, but I now wish to advertise and
trade and brand as something else entirely. Do I need to regsiter a Business
name (as offered by www.anewbusiness.co.uk at £60 a year) or is it not
necessary?

When I get to obtaining a business bank account, will I be able to accept
cheques payable to:

a. Me by my name
b. The Ltd Co. name
c. The Business name

?

Thanks,

Fred.

Why not simply pass a resolution to change the company name? It would
simplify things considerably.

That rather depends on how you set up the account(s) and what conditions you
agree with the bank. I have five different business accounts in two
different names. However, it would simplify your accounting (and probably
your relations with Inland Revenue) if you forget about having payments made
in your name.

From the FAQ on the site you gave...

Q DO I HAVE TO REGISTER MY BUSINESS NAME?
No. There has been no legal requirement to register business names
since 1982, however, we have been providing a search, registration and
protection service since 1984. Successfully upholding thousands of
registered member's rights to their names and have paid out over £1
million in legal fees protecting members rights.

Not necessary. That site just wants to make £60 out of you.

no

b. The Ltd Co. name
yes

c. The Business name
Only if you can prove to the bank that it is a genuine business name. To
do this you just need at a notice as your place of business saying
'Spotty' is a trading name of Acne Ltd. All you business stationery must
show the full Ltd Co name and make it clear that Spotty is a trading
name of Acne Ltd.
