California Sales Tax Repealed?

Is it true that sales tax in California were repealed or
stopped or cut, this year?

Someone told me that Govenor Schwartzeneger repealed the
sales tax.

If it is true, was the sales tax repealed on everything, or
just on certain items? Was it repealed for good, or just for
a certain length of time?

No such luck. He got a tax on cars repealed. The vehicle
license fee had been tripled and the voters took that as the
last straw.

Don't I wish! It's 7.75% statewide, with some counties
adding a surcharge, bringing it up to 8.25% (e.g. Los
Angeles).

What he repealed was the vehicle property tax INCREASE that
is assessed with the annual registration.

The Governator eliminated the increase in the car tax that
had been instituted in the prior administration. The sales
tax remains the same.

In San Francisco it's 8.50%. I suspect that's the max
allowable.

Without checking, I suspect another 1/4 % is possible. It
seems likely that the maximum local sales tax is a full
percent, rather than 3/4 %.

Details are in Pamphlet 71 from the CA Board of
Equalization. The state rate is 7.25%. 6% is kept by the
state. 1% goes to the local taxing authority and the
remaining .25% goes to the local transporation fund. San
Francisco has the second highest rate at 8.5%. .25% to the
County Finance Authority, .5% to BART (Bay Area Rapid
Transit) and .5% to the County Transportation Authority. The
highest rate is in the city limits of Avalon at 8.75%. Here
in LA, the rate is 8.25%, with the 1% excess going to county
transportation.

As far as I am aware, there is no limit to how much the
local rate can add to the total. It takes a two thirds
majority vote of the electorate of the taxing district to
increase the rate.
