Can my current wife claim the alimony I pay to my ex-wife?

I have been claiming alimony paid as a deduction on my Federal taxes.

My current wife and I file separately.

She has a much higher income than I do since she works and I am retired.

My question is can my current wife claim the alimony I pay to my ex-wife?
I would use only the standard deduction format.

In other words the alimony would be claimed only once but on my current
wife's tax return, not mine.

This appears to give us a bigger overall refund by greatly reducing my
current wife's taxable income.

Probably not. In a community property state, maybe. I'll let one of those
community property folks tell you if it's so. But as I understand community
property rules, she cound only claim half, if any at all.

The huge problem, and why it's not gonna fly in most states is, that your
current wife has no obligation to make those payments, so can't deduct them.

No, because she is not the one obligated to make the payments.
