cannot import Money 98 file in Money 2004

When I try to convert my Money 98 file to a Money 2004 file, Money 2004 stops
responding. It has created files on my hard drive (both a backup of the old
file and a new Money 2004 file), but even after shutting Money 2004 down with
the Task Manager, restarting it, and then trying to load the new Money 2004
file, it once again stops responding. So far I am stuck with using Money 98.

You may not succeed, but have you tried letting the computer run
over night?

You might try a clean boot.

in Windows XP". Perhaps with those you can convert.

And if you had access to an older version of Money, such as 2000,
you might be able to use that as an intermediate step.

One more thing: in your Money 2004 install folder, there is a
program called salv.exe. Running that on your Money 98 file may
produce a modified file that converts for you.

If I just let it run, after a bit of time I get the "Money has encountered
an error and has to close" message. I have sent the error report to
Microsoft, but nothing has come of this. Whether or not I use my original
Money 98 file or one I have run through the repair process (salv.exe), the
same thing happens. Unfortunately, my copy of Money 2004 is OEM from Dell,
and they have been unable to provide any help. Microsoft itself doesn't
provide free support for OEM versions, so I have not been able to get help
there either.
