Hi All.

What does the error message "Company file in use" mean. I get this error
message from time to time and can't seem to pin it down to anything. I have
three computers using quickbooks. Sometimes I get this meaage and all three
peple are using quickbooks, other times I get this message and the other two
computers are in quickbooks, but no one is using them.

Thanks,

David Parfett.

Do you have mult-user support enabled for Quickbooks on all 3 machines? If
any of the computers have the company file open but in single-user mode then
it locks others out. If the other computers have the file open in
multi-user but you try to logon as single-user then that won't work either.

Hi, Tara,

Thanks for your reply. All of the computers are set to use Quickbooks in
multi user mode. Through the day, all computers are using quickbooks to
perform various functions on the same data set. Hours can go by without any
problem and then suddenly this error message will appear.

QB does not release file locks quickly. Having me and others
really complain about this made newer versions better, but I
am not sure it got. fully fixed. Get users to always open Sample
files before exiting in a multi-use environment.

QB also installs a program that contacts QB every time you start
your computer and stays in memory, even if you turn off automatic
updates. This is very wasteful because it can check hundreds of
times a year to load around a dozen updates a year. This is really
a problem for those who have multiple versions of QB, as they can
have a separate update program for each QB version. These
programs also conflict with other programs. Everyone should really
delete these STATUP programs right after every QB install.
