Depending on how complex the business is and/or how extensive the chart of
accounts is, how many transactions/entries have been made since the last
year-end and a number of other factors, it's probably best just to start a
new QB file from scratch. Be sure to use reconciled balances for the
starting balances in your balance sheet accounts. This approach will allow
you to leave any legacy clutter behind in the old accounting system. It's
best to do this at a logical point in time say at the start of a new fiscal
year. Of course, running prior year info will require you to run it from
the old system and you won't have an easy ability to run year-over-year
comparison reports for the first year after the switch, but all too often
the amount of "garbage" that comes through into the new financials
out-weighs the benefits of pulling that info in. Also, there's often a
fairly large amount of clean-up work after automated conversion from one
system to another that significantly reduces the benefits of any such
conversion utility.
