USA Discontinued Ops

How common is it for a segment being treated as discontinued operations to be unsold? What happens if it is not sold within one year and how is this accounted for?

Typically sold within a year, but longer can happen.
Topic 205-20-45-1G lists allowable exceptions to the 1 year rule. Please refer directly to those as they are too lengthy for me to retype here. Overall, though, if you do not have a good reason, then those Ops are going to be re-included into the main financial statements.
