I have a client who asked if he donated to a private, non-profit school that his grandchild attends if that donation would be tax deductible. I am not sure how far the reach would need to be to say it was not for the benefit of the attendee/family member. My conservative side is saying no since it is a direct relative. The money was designated for the school operations, not for the child's tuition.

Thank you in advance.

Was the donation made with any strings, like crediting the grandson's tuition with the donation?

Then it should be deductible as a charitable contribution.
The school should provide a letter specifically stating "no goods or services were exchanged for the donation".
