Hi there,

I recently reviewed a previous year tax return (2017) to understand why I was did not receive EIC. I had filed my taxes via Turbo Tax and was expecting to receive the EIC based on Turbo Taxes estimates, however, I received a letter in the mail stating that my taxes had been corrected and the new return amount was about $2500 less.

Basic info about the filing:

Married filing jointly (neither claimed as dependents)
One dependent (child)

Info from 2017 Tax Transcript:

ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME:..............................................$26,794.00
ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME PER COMPUTER:.................................$26,794.0
...
EARNED INCOME CREDIT:................................................$2,945.00
EARNED INCOME CREDIT PER COMPUTER:.......................................$0.00
...
SCHEDULE 8812 ADDITIONAL CHILD TAX CREDIT:.............................$943.00
SCHEDULE 8812 ADDITIONAL CHILD TAX CREDIT PER COMPUTER:................$943.00
SCHEDULE 8812 ADDITIONAL CHILD TAX CREDIT VERIFIED:....................$943.0

...
Refund or Amount Owed
REFUND AMOUNT:......................................................$-3,888.00
APPLIED TO NEXT YEAR'S ESTIMATED TAX:....................................$0.00
ESTIMATED TAX PENALTY:...................................................$0.00
TAX ON INCOME LESS STATE REFUND PER COMPUTER:............................$0.00
BAL DUE/OVER PYMT USING TP FIG PER COMPUTER:........................$-3,888.00
BAL DUE/OVER PYMT USING COMPUTER FIGURES:.............................$-943.00
FORM 8888 TOTAL REFUND PER COMPUTER:.....................................$0

In my return check, I received $943, but not the additional $2945 that I expected from the EIC.

I recently review my return and verified the qualifications for the EIC.

Bottom line question: What is the process for requesting that the IRS reconsider and award the EIC for 2017?

I really appreciate any insight. Thank you in advance!

Go back to the letter from IRS. It will have a letter reference number and a phone number to call IRS with questions about the letter. Call them and give them the reference number and ask your question.

Kirby,

Thank you so much for your guidance. In the process of moving, I believe that I have misplaced the letter that the IRS sent (still in the process of searching...). Do you happen to be aware of a way to look up either the letter sent or the reference number?
Thank you again!

The above says to call 800-829-1040.
The letter may have stated a time limit for you to question their action so follow up right away. Just call them and they should be able to look up your account and the letter that was sent.

AGI for married filing jointly should be less than $ 20,950. You have too much income.
