File Conversion from Money 99 to Money 03

Jeff Miller

I've been trying to convert my Money 99 file to Money
2003. To do so, I've gone to the file option on the menu
bar and chosen open. From the file open dialog box, I've
chosen the Money 99 data file. Money 03 launches a wizrd
and an audio file tells me that Money will save a backup
file, click Next to proceed.

When I click next, the conversion process window pops up
and the progress bar begins to move across the screen.
Typically, it moves all the way across once, then moves
abour 80% of the way across before locking up Money 03.
After waiting several minutes to see if this is just a
matter of heavy data crunching, I click on the title bar
of Money 03 to find it says it has stopped responding.

I've attempted this several times, deleting and restoring
the Money 99 file and deleting the incomplete Money 03
file.

Try overnight.

I would suggest you keep an extra copy of your Money 99 file on CDR
if you can, just for good measure

I went back to the old file in Money 99 and exported to
Quicken files. I also archived old data. I then took the
exported and archived files to Money 2003 and first tried
opening the archived data. The archived data crashed
Money 2003. The truncated file with data since the
archive date converted without a problem.

Based on this behavior, I'm uncertain whether the original
Money 99 file has issues, whether Money 2003 can't handle
files as large as the one I tried to conver, or whether
Money 2003 just plain has "issues".
Given those symptoms, the next thing I would try is to "archive" but
set a date older than your oldest data. It may not fix things, but
if you still have your Money 99 installed, it seems worth a try. Let
us know.

Most likely it's that the original M99 file has issues. When I converted my
file to M03 it was probably three times the size you are talking about here.
Also, M03 seems to have had "issues" with file upgrades, based on the large
number of unhappy posters here. Some people have reported that M04 can
convert some files M03 couldn't. M02 and previous did not seem to elicit
nearly as many posts about file upgrade failures.
