Help!! Can't read the restored data file!!!

I recently purchased a new laptop and loaded QB2004Pro, of which I am a
registered user, onto the new computer. I also have the program loaded onto
my home computer, and had it loaded in my OLD laptop. I did the usual backup
of the data file on my home computer and then attempted to restore it in the
new laptop. It never worked! I keep getting the "this is not a Quickbooks
data file, etc...." I searched on Intuit's web site for the error message
and found reference to "corrupted" files and such. So I redid the backup and
verified data integrity...and still got the same error. A 45 minute call to
"Ranjit" in tech support provided absolutely nothing but a dead battery on
my cell phone. Hell, I know more about the program than he did!!!!! Anyway,
now I'm thinking it may be some sort of copy protection scheme preventing me
from restoring my data file. Has anyone in this group had this problem, and
if so, what to do????? I do NOT want to have to purchase another $300 dollar
copy just to be able to use my laptop at work.

This may be a stupid question but have you made sure the version installed
on the new laptop is of the same release installed on the old laptop/pc?
Not sure why it wouldn't think the file isn't Quickbooks rather than just
tell you "this file was created in a newer version..." but that may be a
possibility.

Dude

Hey

do a search for Qbb and QBW files

copy all to a disk
put on laptop

open the QBW file -- should work fine.

try to restore the QBB file and see if it's just the backup routine

REmember.....it's a damn data file...it's movable!
