I know where to put the standard (or itemized) deduction on my 1040A, but where is my personal exemption shown? Can I take both? Are they combined on the standard line on the 1040 A?
I have never understood this and I think I have been missing this for years. I am 78, retired on a low income pension, single and itemize.

At the top of page two is where you deduct your personal exemptions if the are not phased out.

Page one is where you identify which personal exemptions you may qualify for. Page two is where you deduct them.

This is a very basic concept. If you do not understand it, you should not be preparing your own returns.

At the very top under where it says filing status? You see where it says exemptions? Thats where you put your personal exemption.
I don't think you understood my question. WHERE ( on what line ) do I show the $4,050 that is my 2017 personal exemption. I know I am single, and entitled to one (1) exemption and that I put the (1) at the very top on the front of the 1040.

I understood fully. Excuse us for not quoting a specific line number.

I do not think you understood, you should not be doing your own return if you cannot determine something so basic.

Sorry to stir your ire. I am 79 years old and on a very limited income, so I HAVE to do my own taxes because professionals cost too much. I have no kids, and depend on friends for most everything. I will be not be using this website any more. I don't need chastised for asking a question.

You were not chastised for asking a question. You were chastised for chastising. Based on your additional information I would recommend you look into your local VITA program.
