How do I disable the registration reminder from Quicken 98?

I installed my old Quicken 98 on my new Dell desktop and I'm planning
on keeping it -- because I can't get the MS Money 05 to import the QIF
files properly.

The only annoyance with 98, which actually works well for my purposes,
is that it's always bugging me to register the product. Trouble is,
you can't do that anymore...Intuit no longer accepts online or phone
registration for a product that old.

I've tried changing the Registration value to 0 in the Quicken.ini file
in Windows. That works for a while, but then the reminders that I have
only x number of logins remaining resume. I could just keep going into
the .ini file and changing the value back to 0, but I figure there has
to be an easier way. Can anybody help?

[I know, I could just go buy a newer version of Quicken...but I'm
cheap! :) ]

From a post on http://www.quickenforums.com/

"If you do not wish to use Quicken online, then let me explain how you can
disable registration. With the Quicken program open, hold down the Ctrl +
Shift keys on the keyboard, and go to the Online menu. From the Online menu
choose One Step Update. After selecting One Step Update, with Ctrl + Shift
still held down, you will receive a message that states, "You will no longer
be prompted for registration." At this point registration is disabled and
you will not receive any further messages regarding it. These instructions
will work for Quicken 2003-2005. For Quicken 2001-2002 you will need to use
the Finance menu instead of the Online menu. All other instructions are the
same."

I know it is not for your version of Quicken, but perhaps there is a clue in
there somewhere on how you can disable it for Q98.

The other option is to register. I've registered the same version more than
once, and Intuit doesn't care.

OK, but how or where do I do that? The phone registration number is no
longr current and the online method doesn't work either...I just get
something about "Server cannot be found". I looked all over their site
(both Intuit and Quicken) and I can't find anyplace to register.

So much for my idea. I guess they've decided not to accept Q98 registrations any
more. Hopefully, the previous poster's directions work.

Solution for disabling Quicken Deluxe 98 registration window

Quicken Deluxe 98 can no longer be registered (I like this program and have no desire to upgrade, so I'll continue using it as long as operating systems allow). I was able to disable the annoying registration window (after moving program to a different computer) that kept appearing when starting the program by some trial and error. Below is what I did, and the registration window no longer pops up anymore:

1) moved the files QWREMIND.INI and qwrmdnd.dll to a temporary folder
2) attempted to open Quicken Program, but would not open -said it could not find qwrmdnd.dll
3) moved qwrmdnd.dll back to the original folder (QUICKENW folder)
4) opened program
5) closed program
6) moved QWREMIND.INI back to the original folder (QUICKENW folder)

I don't know if all these steps are necessary, but it worked for me! No more annoying registration window upon startup of program!

Have been using Quicken 2000 basic until computer was rebuilt recently. Intuit no longer registers the product, nor will their new customer number (or my old one) satisfy the request for registration.

If I simply ignore the reminder, will Quicken continue to boot up (12 more times) or will it lock up and no longer let me use it?

Quicken 2000 Registration

I've just run out of 'lives' in Quicken 2000 and tried SteveR's method. Surprise; it enabled me to open the program again! However, the problem remains that I cannot register the program and will probably have to repeat this process from time to time. The SHIFT + CTRL method does not get rid of the register nag box in Quicken 2000, does anyone have any suggestions how to cure this problem?

SteveR, that's promising that you're not getting the registration popping up anymore. I am down to 3 attempts left and tried out your steps but unfortnately not working for me.

The QWREMIND.INI file is just a text file and I am guessing one of the settings need tweaked or a new one added to stop the registration popping up.

Could anybody using Quicken Deluxe 98 open their QWREMIND.INI file with Textpad or Wordpad and share what they have. Here is what is in my one:

[Files]
1=C:\QUICKENW\CITLTD.QDF

[C:\QUICKENW\CITLTD.QDF]
HasPwd=1
ShowTx=3
ShowChk=3
ShowEPmt=3
ShowInv=3
ShowNotes=3
ShowNotes=3
ShowAlert=3
NoteRange=1

Thanks, Stephen
