I write articles for a non-profit organization that is dedicated to
educating consumers about guarding their financial privacy and protecting
them from identity theft.

Specifically, we try to give consumers information about predatory lending
practices, identity theft scams, privacy news, and the politics surrounding
these issues. We're trying to build a grass roots organization that can
affect political change.

We're now at the point that there are more stories to write, than there are
people to write them. I'm looking for people who would be interested in
volunteering their time to write for us. (Yes, if you write an article for
us you will be given credit as the author)

Here is a little information about what we're up against.

There are a lot of consumer abuses going on within the credit industry, and
very few people that are doing anything about them. The sharing of personal
financial data by creditors has become rampant. This has led to an all time
high in identity theft cases. It has also gotten us to the point that 79% of
credit reports contain errors. 25% of all credit reports now contain errors
that are bad enough that they can keep people from getting a job or a loan.

Several states have tried to impose strict privacy standards on lenders and
other businesses. Unfortunately, in December of 2003, Congress caved into
the banking lobby and made it illegal for the states the stop the practice
of affiliate sharing of financial data. They did this even though a variety
of consumer surveys show that more than 90% of all consumers want stronger
privacy laws. This means that any bank you do business with can furnish all
of your private data to its affiliates without your consent. And thanks to
Congress, your state is pretty well helpless to do anything to stop it. If
you bank with big bank, they have thousands of affiliates.

Other abuses include the sale of children's data by large marketing firms,
loan red-lining, the sale of so-called credit monitoring services that will
actually do nothing to help you if your identity is stolen, etc... The list
goes on and on.

If this concerns you, you are not alone. Last year identity theft cost the
economy $54 billion dollars. Financial fraud through "phishing" schemes cost
consumers an additional $500 million.

We're trying to find a way to make Congress listen to consumers, rather than
just the lenders. If you are interested in contributing content to our site

will never get your reply).

I appreciate any support, in any form, you can give us.
