Journal Entry to Inventory/COG?

I'd like to use SBA for my business accounting, but not to manage sales info.
I already have POS software that works great for any detail information I
need.

BUT I can't figure out how I could post summary info into SBA since it won't
let me do journal entries to Inventory. I would like to debit
inventory/credit checking when I make a purchase, and then once a month debit
C.O.G./credit inventory.

Is this possible somehow?

Add a new account called inventory.
For account type use "other current assets".
