Lost my Quicken sounds?

D

Don B

Hey gang,

I am running Quicken 2012.

I assembled a new system this week, installed Windows 8.1 and all my
apps, etc. Clean install of everything.

In Quicken, I seem to have lost all my sounds - at least they do not
play with the event they are assigned to.

They are still there, and still show assigned in the sounds dialogue
box, and work when I press the " test" button. But they do not play at
all whilst I use Quicken.

I of course used a backup copy of my Quicken file when I first started
Quicken 2012 after the new install. Everything data wise is fine , just
no sounds any longer.

Any ideas why they no longer play, and how I might get them to play once
again?

Thanks for any help on this.

Hi, Don.

This has been a perennial problem since about the year 2000, every time we
have to install a new version of Quicken. Well, not every time, but
whenever our new version loses track of our previous corrections.

You won't be able to fix the problem by clicking buttons in Windows or
Quicken. You'll need to change the Windows Registry, using Regedit.exe.
Until you do that, Quicken won't even appear on the Sounds tab at Control
Panel | Hardware and Sound | Sound. I've been posting this message every
year, so here it is again. Note that the details fit MY computer, but
you'll need to follow the instructions in the text at the top of the file to
make it fit YOUR Windows.

Please report back if this does or does not work for you, Don. Others will
want to know. And so will I.

RC
RC,
Many thanks for that information!
I will be most happy to try it and report back, but want to clarify
before I do:
Quicken does appear on my sounds tab in control panel/sound.
In fact, it shows the appropriate sounds assigned to the events, and the
sounds actually work when I press the "test " button.

However, when working in Quicken, there are no sounds heard.

I have been running on no sleep for about the last 24+ hours or so, if I
do this I will wait till I can get some sleep in me, hopefully here in a
bit. Not sure I want to mess with registry much until I do get at least
some reast.

But being as how they do appear properly under sounds, you think this is
still what I should do?
Also, I am looking at purchasing 2014, reckon I might also wait and see
if it corrects itself once I have 2014?

Thanks I really appreciate your assistance,

Hi, Don.

Then maybe it IS as easy as: Edit | Preferences | Setup | Turn on Quicken
Sounds.

But I assumed that you had already done that.

When you are rested, please let us know. Someone else might have a better
idea.

Whew, finally I was able to get some much needed sleep...

Well you are correct RC, it was just that easy!
Sorry I did not think to check in preferences which is what I should
have done, never realized there was an option to turn Quicken sounds on
and off.

Thank you, working like a champ now!

Hi, Don.

Great! And thanks for the feedback. ;<)

Stand by...somebody else will probably be asking the same question next
year. ;^{

I certainly will, though I find the older I get the quicker I forget
things, so I am likely to be asking again the next time as well :).

You are always so helpful here, and do such a great job explaining
things in very easy to understand terms.

I will tell you a short funny story. My wonderful beautiful bride, she
loves to shop - especially on Saturdays. I love it, cause she loves to
shop alone! I hate shopping, much rather be here messing with this computer.

We have been married since Nov 08, and she always hates it when I
download and enter transactions into Quicken from my bank's website.
She says that " cha ching" noise it makes with every transaction I
enter, makes her very nervous. She will say " baby, was that all me?"
LOL. And the funny thing is, she is very frugal - very. I am blessed in
that regard.

Anyway after I did this new computer build this week, she saw me
entering some transactions and was like - where is the cha-ching? I told
her apparently I lost the sounds when I installed Quicken on this new
machine. She was elated!! She was like that is so awesome, I don't have
to hear all those cha-chings and worry about you being upset that maybe
I spent too much.

Well today, after she got home from her regular Saturday shopping trip,
- yep - first thing I did was manually enter some transactions I had
from the day before, after she walked in the door - the look on her face
was priceless! :) She could not believe that dang cha-ching was back!

I have not told her yet, this evening I went in and changed the entry
sound to something a little less intense, just a short quick swoosh
sound. I will wait till she notices. :)

This is I guess really the last newsgroup I keep up with anymore, most
everything else I follow has moved on to web based forums... nice to
know when someone needs assistance there are folks here like yourself
here that still participate in usenet. Sad to see it going the way of
the tookie bird, I guess things are always changing as we move forward.
But as long as this group is here and somewhat active, I will continue
to keep an eye on it. I don't post all that much, but do read it
especially when new Quicken versions come out to see what folks think
about it.

Thanks again, I really appreciate the help. Hopefully I can remember at
least for a while, sounds in Quicken can be toggled on and off.

Merry Christmas!

As can each individual sound. If she doesn't like that one, why not
turn that one off and keep the rest?

Hi, Don.

Thanks for the kind words. Replies like that are what got me hooked on
newsgroups in the first place, about 20 years ago. That was after I had
gone searching for a solution to my own problem and got help from someone.
And I agree that the forums just don't work as well for me.

Your bride sounds much like mine, except that we were married 50 years
earlier, in '58. ;<) My wife won't set foot in my "messy" office; she
hands me her receipts at the door. ;^}

One year before me, in '59!

LOL! My wife and I share the same messy office, where we each have our
own desk and our own computer.

Don B

Dang guys,

And here I felt I was feeling my age, getting older and all . I was BORN
in 58! :)

My wife will share my office, but trust me she will not let it get messy
- has to be clean and organized well. That is a lifestyle she has done a
very good job getting me trained to... :) and I do like it.

Or just lower/turn off the volume when you are using Q?

A lot of women (and men, for that matter) SHOULD feel guilty for
needless spending. WANTS versuis NEEDS. E.g., in most of Canada and
the U.S., one does NOT NEED bottled water. Almost everywhere in
the U.S. and Canada, the standards for public water supplies are
HIGHER than those of bottled water.

WTF?? Sounds to me like you ADDED something to the water you're
drinking. What possible relevance does THIS have??

(or perhaps did you mispost, meaning to go to alt.water.pure perhaps?)

The OP had been commenting on how guilty and defensive his spouse
had been, re her spending.
I simply suggested that she likely had good reason for her
guilt--unnecessary wasting of the family funds. A tip of the Grinch
hat to you, Andrew!!

Oh, I see! Gotcha. I still like the idea that perhaps something was
added to the water, however, given the "spirit" of the season.

Unqualified MERRY CHRISTMAS to you.
