mfs or mfj? NY and NJ

What is the best way to go about this scenario?

We live in NY. I work in NJ. She works in NY. We filed
federal jointly(MFj) and we we will get back 3500. We tried
to file NY state and it says we owe 2700? do we have to NY
state jointly, and do we have to file NJ jointly, even
though I am the only one that worked there. Thanks.

Look at the form instructions.

You must file jointly in NY if you filed a joint federal
return. You may file your nonresident NJ return either
jointly or separately, whichever gets you the better result.

Do your NJ nonresident return first. NY will allow you
credit for the tax you pay to NJ on your NJ earnings,
limited to the proportion of your NY tax liability that
relates to that "double taxed" income.

You have to file your total income to your resident state.
You have to file in your non resident state for the income
earned there. On your resident state, you claim a credit for
taxes paid to other states.
