'Microsoft Money has stopped working'

Running MS Money 2007, Windows Vista (home premium). Starting last
night, directly after logging in (or working off line), I get an error
'Microsoft Money has stopped working' and money crashes; the problem
details are below. Worked up until last night. I've tried system
restore, uninstalling (including deleting money directory, and
cleaning registry) and reinstalling, and the error persists. any
suggestions? thanks,

yup- 'I've tried system restore, uninstalling (including deleting
money directory, and cleaning registry) and reinstalling, and the
error persists.'

got the problem fixed though; as an fyi for others, it appears to be
the same basic problem as some other folks have had with msvcr80.dll-
display of the investment performance block on the home page. i
couldn't get into the options and remove that module before money
crashed (as it appears some other folks here have been able to), so i
had to restore my file from a backup, then remove the module.

I suggest you open any file you can, such as Sample.mny.
In XP, you can do that by going to your Money install folder
and right-clicking Sample.mny, and choosing Open.
Go to Tools->Settings->ProgramSettings and set the
(GeneralDisplayStartMoneyWithThisPageOpen:AccountList.
Close Money.

Then open the problem file once or twice.


Then Tools->Settings->HomePageDisplayOptions and Remove the
Investment Performance module. If you still have a problem, remove
everything. If the problem goes away, you can add things back until
the crash does not happen. Add back in the other things you want
on the home page. Let us know which was the problem module.

as I enter my password I get an error message saying that ms money and
encountered a problem and needs to shut down. I am currently using the
2007 home/business trial version on a pc laptop using Windows XP. I
read something about a logitech mouse or something to that effect. We

I appear to be back in business, but only by the skin of my teeth.

The root cause seems to be that the *.mny file was corrupted. I don't
know how it got corrupted, but I have a clue which appeared as part of
the restoration.

I did do a system restore, I did a reinstall, I did try using Money
2007 vs. using 2006 ... all were ineffectual and red-herrings.

The *.mny file was about 26 mb. I don't know if that a lot or not. I
guess now it is. But why it would care I don't know. Unfortuantely,
I did not have a recent backup file. The best I had was a backup
taken about 1-month ago.

I opened that file, and Money 2006 worked just fine. I did a quick
repair and it seemed to be ok with that. I did a full repaire
creating a new file. The file size grew, but Money was satisfied with
doing the repair. I used that repaired file as starting point to add
in the transactions missing from the point of the backup (mid-Nov).

I downloaded transactions from my bank accounts (2 of them) and from
my brokerage account (four acounts there). After doing the download
update, would take a backup then accept transcations for an account,
then another backup, then accept transactions for another account.
Interestingly, Money would fail (with the error message reported
here), consistently, upon accepting transactions for one of the
brokerage accounts. Those transactions evidently were corrupting the
file. How and why is a mystery.

So ... I delete the brokerage account and started again. I pretended
it was a new account and updated across the internet that account, but
instead of taking full transactions, only started with the current
position. That seemed to work.

Also ... thinking that file size may have something to do with it (and
I'm chagrined and disappointed to think that it does), I archived some
of the older data using the archive funcationality. That reduced the
file size somewhat, but I have to say not as much as I would have
expected.

So now I have a recovered *.mny file ... with less data and re-built
one of the accounts from scratch.

I conclude:

: Money corrupted the file, not me. Caused by adding new transactions
of one of the brokerage account. There was nothing unusual about
those transcations. But Money clearly corrupted the file and the
corruption is replicable.

: using Money 2007 vs. 2006 doesn't seem to make a difference.

I too am having problems. I bought Microsoft Money Plus Home and
Business ... installed it. Tried to open it. No luck. It just
constantly is saying "Microsoft Money has stopped working". It has
never worked. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, etc. I even tried
installing a trial straight from the Microsoft website, no luck.

I am running Vista Home Premium if that makes a difference.

So mine stopped working 4/20. It worked fine 4/19. I didn't do anything to the system.

But as others noted, I had Investment Summary on home page and it can't load without crashing.

Here's how I fixed it.

Change you system date from 2010 to 2009 (or any date earlier than the day it stopped, but I suggest just changing the year). Hit apply.

Open Money. It should work after entering password. Click on customize your home page and remove anything that has investment links.

Change your system date back to current date. Hit apply and okay.

Close Money.

When you reopen Money, it should work great again.

I too am having problems. I bought Microsoft Money Plus Home and

never worked. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, etc. I even tried

After just about going nuts and now being bold ( I pulled all my hair out) I tried everything to no avail, I could restore a backup and all would be fine, enter a couple of investment transactions shut down money, restart and crash! Thanks to your suggestions it now seems to work. Maybe you know how to put my hair back.

Hard to believe years later, but I just had the same problem (only difference was the module at fault was listed as mcmoney.dll). Based on the above, I found a simpler solution:

1) disable your network connection (doesnt matter how. unplug the ethernet, administratively disable the adapter, etc). The issue seems to be when money goes online to update prices, etc from one or more brokerage accounts)

2) Launch money. Should come up fine. Now go into settings and disable the periodic updates for news, prices, etc. Pretty much anything online.

3) close money. renable your internet connection.

You should be good to go...at least until the next problem. Much as I hate to say it, I may need to look at replacing money. Out of support for too long.
