'Microsoft Money has stopped working'

I'm running Microsoft Money Plus Delux and Vista Home Premium.
When attempting to start Money I recieve the Error message:
<'Microsoft Money has stopped working'
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you know if a solution is
available.>

I have read other threads with similar sounding problems and I have tried:
+> running as administrator by right clicking icon
+> article 836197; MSXML 4.0 SP2
+> uninstall won't work for some reason; nor does reinstall from the
original CD
+> opening a recent back up file gives the same error

Maybe important to mention?
+> This error message is shown against a white background and I don't get
the opportunity/far enough to sign in.
+> Money was working until last week. Around that time I installed and HP
Oficejet AIO (J6410) and related software. Also around that time I let
Windows Update do it's thing.
+> I'm running McAfee SecurityCenter

Can anyone help?

One thing you can try...

Copy Sample.mny from your install folder, to your Documents folder.
Right-click that file in WE, and choose open. Does Money open
successfully?

Also consider starting in Safe Mode with networking. This is best
down behind a NAT router. See if you can open Money. Some report
they cannot open Money in safe mode normally anyway. I can. Anyway
this will cause many things to not start up during boot. There is a
more complex process called a selective boot.

Also not that you could do a system restore back to the point where
things were working. If that does not fix things, you can undo that.

Cal,
After everything else failed I gave in and did a system restore (actually
did 3 before going back far enough) and that got Money running again. I
turned off automatic updates but I'm wondering what to do now... If I let
Windows run updates as it keeps reminding me it needs to do will Money stop
loading again?

I am glad to hear its working. You would not want to actually turn
off Windows updates. Consider this: have updates just notify you.
Install maybe the first 25%, and see if things break. If it does not
break Money, create another restore point, and do the next 25%. If
Money stopped working, do a System Restore. .....

Now I wouldn't be surprised if you did all of the critical updates,
and found things were working fine. After all, it does for the rest
of us with those same updates. In that case, it would seem that it
was something other than a Windows update that stopped things from
working.

I'm really glad too! Thanks again for the assistance.
(I meant to say that I had disabled automatic installations of updates, but
downloading and notifying is still active. I figured that it would be best
to install the critical updates one at a time and then check to see that
Money still works. You're probably right that it was something else... maybe
McAfee or an HP program I had loaded about that time.)

Bumping this back up, I'm happy it worked for you but none of these solutions
has worked for me. I keep multiple back up and none work, i adjusted the DEP
and it didn't work. Uninstalling and reinstalling has not worked. I restored
back farther and farther till over a week before 1 know it worked last and I
cannot get it to work. The MS Money window opens up and then closes. I can
open the sample file just fine but my actual file won't work. I'm stumped.

You are Microsoft Money Plus Deluxe and Vista Home Premium, and you
get a 'Microsoft Money has stopped working' message when you try to
work with your regular files?

Open a file such as sample.mny. Then go to
Tools->Settings->ProgramSettings and set the
(GeneralDisplay:)StartMoneyWithThisPageOpen:AccountList

Then Tools->Settings->HomePageDisplayOptions and Remove the
BillsAndDeposits and SpendingTracker modules. If you still have a
problem when you go to the "home" page, remove all modules. If the
problem goes away, you can add things back until the crash does not
happen. Add back in the other things you want on the home page.
Let us know which was the problem module.

I'm actually using Money 2003. I've loved it since I got it in 04 and never
ever ever had a problem. I have had vista for 2 years and again never had a
problem. I have adjusted the general display to starting with the account
list open but don't seem to have an option for the tracker modules. I took
them all out in the sample. Closed money. Opened sample again and tried to
open my files, both the main file and the 4 back ups, one on the hard drive,
2 on disc and one on my back up hard drive. All 5 files make ms money "stop
working".

Well, it's my turn to bump this up. I've tried the sample.mny trick and it
did not work, nor does anything else. I get to my sign on page, then enter
my password, then it goes to "convert" my files (don't understand why) and at
that point, I get the error message that money has stopped working and will
close down. I'm using Money 2003 and Vista. Money 2003 worked fine in my XP
but that computer crashed and this new computer has Vista. help?

That would seem to imply that the file was from a version earlier
than the currently installed version.

Try opening Money by right-clicking the launch icon and choosing
RunAsAdministrator.
