Migrating to a new machine and trying to restore

My dad threw out his Win 98 machine and replaced it with an XP. Has the

latest Quicken, but when he tries to restore the backup from the
older version of Quicken he gets an error message: "ask the network
administrator for permission" or some such thing. He can't load the
file, and hates to start over again. any hints?

First of all, I don't think he can "restore" the files. He needs to "open"
the account file and let Q convert it to the new format.

Where are the files? On CD or floppy? If so, try copying them to a directory
on the hard drive and verify that the "Read Only" attribute is off.

Thanks!!

So he would OPEN the QDATA file from where it is on the CD Rom (or it that
doesn't work, COPY all the files from the backup directory on the CD ROM to ...
what directory ... and then open them from there. Right? the conversion to the
2002 format should be automatic and of course he may need to enter the password
that he used when he had the files on the old machine.

Have I got it right??

Van!!

He would have to copy the files to the hard drive first. Q won't open an
account file from CD since files on a CD are automatically marked "Read
Only". Once files are copied to the hard drive, you have to remove the "Read
Only" attribute. Then pen the file with Q.

Don't know about the password, but sounds right.
