Money 2003 - AUTORUN.INF is missing or corrupt

S

Si

I am trying to install Microsoft Money 2003 from a backup I took of the CD
(it is in a "safe place" however I can assure you, I did buy it back in
2003, when I upgraded from Money 98).

Anyway, I am using Vista, I click on Setup.exe and I get the message
"AUTORUN.INF is missing or corrupt" - which indeed it was missing from my
directory.

I created a file called Autorun.inf, but I have no idea what to add to it, I
guessed at:

[autorun]
OPEN=setup.exe

Can anyone help me with the correct Autorun.inf so I can install it onto my
new Vista PC?

Many thanks,

Si.

In Windows Explorer, browse to the Setup.exe file. Right-click and
choose RunAsAdministrator.

I did not have a AUTORUN.INF file - do you have one on your CD?

I don't have a Money 2003 CD handy, but I fully expect that if I had
a retail Money 2003 CD to check it would. However, since I turn off
AutoRun, it would not try to launch on its own anyway.

Consider booting into safe mode, and running setup.exe.

Hi Si,

Cal is right and Autorun.inf is not very important. To be sure the backup of
the CD that you are using will not initiate installation automatically but
if your CD contains setup.exe - and is good in all other respects - you
should be able to install. If all else fails, try copying your backup of
your Money program to a new directory on your hard-disk and run setup.exe
from there. Do make sure to change all files to read/write and not read only
(on the CD they will have been set to read only).

I don't have the 2003 installation disks to hand at the moment (somewhere in
the attic), but if I think about the structure, is thyere are 'Money' folder
on the disk? If so, there may be a setup file inside there. The installation
program, if inside that folder, will be install.exe, setup.exe or perhaps
something with an MSI extension. You could try running it from that
location, rather then the root of the CD.

Clicking on SysPack.msi runs the install, but I then get a message stating

I suspect that when you copied the CD into the folder, you didn't copy
hidden files (dir /a should list all files, including hidden ones). I
assume that when running all of these you're doing it by right clicking and
selecting 'run as administrator' ?

In some cases you may need to completely uninstall your antivirus program before you install Microsoft Money or you will get the "AUTORUN.INF is missing or corrupt" error. Just exiting the antivirus program does not correct the problem. This has been shown to be a problem with Norton and Kaspersky.

Re: Money 2003 - AUTORUN.INF is missing or corrupt

Thanks Cal, tried that and still the same problem.

I did not have a AUTORUN.INF file - do you have one on your CD?

Regards,

Si.

I don't have a Money 2003 CD handy, but I fully expect that if I had
a retail Money 2003 CD to check it would. However, since I turn off
AutoRun, it would not try to launch on its own anyway.

Consider booting into safe mode, and running setup.exe.

Re: Money 2003 - AUTORUN.INF is missing or corrupt
Hi Si,

Cal is right and Autorun.inf is not very important. To be sure the backup
of
the CD that you are using will not initiate installation automatically but
if your CD contains setup.exe - and is good in all other respects - you
should be able to install. If all else fails, try copying your backup of
your Money program to a new directory on your hard-disk and run setup.exe
from there. Do make sure to change all files to read/write and not read
only
(on the CD they will have been set to read only).

Re: Money 2003 - AUTORUN.INF is missing or corrupt
Thanks guys - I know Autorun.inf is 'not important', however whenever I
click on setup.exe, the setup fails to start, with the message
"AUTORUN.INF
is missing or corrupt".

Re: Money 2003 - AUTORUN.INF is missing or corrupt
I don't have the 2003 installation disks to hand at the moment (somewhere
in
the attic), but if I think about the structure, is thyere are 'Money'
folder
on the disk? If so, there may be a setup file inside there. The
installation
program, if inside that folder, will be install.exe, setup.exe or perhaps
something with an MSI extension. You could try running it from that
location, rather then the root of the CD.

Re: Money 2003 - AUTORUN.INF is missing or corrupt
Below is a DIR of the Money directory which I copied from the CD:

Clicking on Money.msi tells me to install from Setup.exe.
Clicking on Setup.exe tells me that AUTORUN.INF is missing or corrupt.
Clicking on Autorun.exe does nothing.
Clicking on SysPack.msi runs the install, but I then get a message stating
"The systems administrator has set policies to prevent this installation"

I'm not doing too well here!

Re: Money 2003 - AUTORUN.INF is missing or corrupt
I suspect that when you copied the CD into the folder, you didn't copy
hidden files (dir /a should list all files, including hidden ones). I
assume that when running all of these you're doing it by right clicking
and
selecting 'run as administrator' ?
