Money 2004 hangs when converting Money99 file

I just purchased the Money 2004 Deluxe in order to bring
myself more up-to-date from my Money 99 version. After I
installed, I started 2004 and it found my Money 99 file
and told me it was about to convert it to 2004 (and make
a backup copy). I then entered my password for access to
the password protected file. it began to convert and
then stopped responding. I tried to then open the new
file with Money 2004 and the program also stopped
responding. I have made a couple of backups and have
tried the conversion again with no luck. Please help.

Thanks

Randy

Define "hang."

When I upgraded from M02 to M03 on my 300 MHz Celeron, the program spent
half an hour sitting at the hourglass. Then it got done and all was well.

If you aren't waiting a very long time before declaring it hung, I advise
you do so. Start it before you go on vacation. See if it's done when you
return.

Thanks, I need a vacation! Anyway, I tried it again with
a copy of the file. Here is what happens. After typing
my password, the program begins and shows the Converting
File progress bar. It takes approx. 2 minutes and the
progress bar completes and the appears again and
completes again. After this, I have the hourglass. I
let it go this time and after approx two more minutes,
then program interface disappears and I receive the
following message : Microsoft Money has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience. The restart Money box is checked and I am
asked if I want to submit the error report to MS. The
error is as follows: msmoney.exe AppVer 12.0.0.613
modname mnyob99.dll modver 12.0.0.613 offset 0023d652. I
submitted the report to MS and then Money 2004 restarts.
I continue and receive the same results and error again.
Thanks.

Aha. Different problem.

You might try running the salv utility against the file or run msmoney -s
against it back on the M99 side.

I tried the salv utility under 2004. The utility ran
fine, but I ended up with the same error after 2004 tried
to convert. I have tried to run msmoney -s from the
command prompt with no luck. (I first uninstalled Money
2004). I can only run the msmoney program from the
program files\microsoft money directory and then it gives
me an error that it can't find mnyob99.dll which is
located in the System subdir. My data file still comes
up just fine under Money 99. Have others had problems
with the file conversion? Can I export to another file
and then import into 2004?
Thanks again.

You might try reinstalling the M99 after uninstalling the M04. I'm wondering
if that's where the dll error is coming from. Then you should also be able
to run msmoney -s from the cmd prompt.

Many others reported file upgrade problems with M03. It's too soon to tell
on M04, but unless they did more work here than elsewhere making M04 from
M03, I will not be surprised if we continue to see many people reporting
problems upgrading with M04.

Export/Import is always a choice. It's rarely a good one. It may ultimately
be your least bad one.

You might also consider opening a support case directly with Microsoft. Big
support costs on file upgrade problems are probably the only way they will
ever look at these issues for serious work in the future.

Have you tried disabling your password in M99 before
attempting to convert to M2004?
