Money is already running.

Upon opening Microsoft Money Plus following closing the application during
the same Windows session (no re-boot)... I receive the following error:
Money is already running.
I see from the task manager that indeed although the program was closed it
is still consuming memory and therefore running. I only receive the error
message therefore Money does not open... typically I reboot my computer to
return to Money. Is this necessary everytime or does anyone know of an
alternate solution? I could end process in task manager but I assume that is
not a "healthy" solution.

Try setting Money to ask before backing up, and see if the problem
occurs if you tell Money not to back up. If that does it for you,
you could work around this by File->Backup before exit when you want
to backup.

In M+: Tools->Settings->BackupSettings
I suggest checking
x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money
Save in [a place on your hard drive ]. It is best to Browse to
a location rather than typing the path.
x Ask me before backing up each time*
x Compress Backup Files
Keep only the _20_most recent backup files [adjust to taste]

x Perform scheduled backups every _28_ days
Save in [a USB flash drive location]
x Ask me before backing up each time*
x Compress Backup Files
Keep only the _2_most recent backup files [adjust to taste]

Then periodically, perhaps each month or three, copy your latest
backup (uniquely named by Money) to a CDR.

I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash drive rather than floppies.
They are bigger, so you don't have to swap media to back up. Plus
they are much more reliable (but not failure-proof).

Money continuing to run comes up every once in a while in this group. I run
money daily and find that the money already running occurs about once a
month. At one point I even spent several months talking with the Money help
desk about the problem. I have not been able to correlate the occurrence
with anything in particular. You do not need to reboot. I have found that
either logging off or killing the process is all that is needed. I have an
icon on my desk top that issues a taskkill to stop money. This is very
similar to using the task manager to perform the same function. Obviously
one needs to be careful and not stop it while it is actually being used.

Hi Todd,

There appears to be a relatively rare race condition while Money shuts down,
it waits for something that has already occurred or misses. In any case it
appears benign. You can kill it with the task manager safely - your Money
file should be ok.
