In the UK, whether an organisation is for profit, or not for profit, if it chooses to fund an employee's further education, then that is up to it. Conditions apply though which are specific to the organisation rather than anything statutory. These are generally conditions that should the employee leave the organisation within a specified timeframe, then they are liable to pay back to the employer a % of the fees that the organisation has paid for their further education. This ranges from 100% to 0% dependant upon at which point the employee leaves.
I imagine that it's a similar situation in the U.S.
