Opening archived Money files

Using Money 2004 but problem was present in earlier
versions.

I usually archive a Jan to Dec Money file each year. If I
then go back and open, say last year's, it updates itself
to the present day with all the items that I have marked
for automatic entry eg DDs, etc. Can I stop this
happening? Money files don't work with read only
attributes. The only solution I can think of is to open a
copy and replace it with the original archive after I've
finished. Is this the only way?

Thanks

What it'll be doing is going through any bills/deposits which are due. You
would need to delete these in the archived file just after you archive it.

Don't archive at all. You lose more than you gain. Year on year trends are
one example.
