My son married a nice girl who comes from a kooky family. Her father
is deep in debt, 2nd and 3rd mortgages to buy a pool and new cars. My
son is worried that father in law will die, leaving all the debt to
his wife who may be able to hold a minimum wage job. So expecting her
to be forced to file bankruptcy. She will have to live with my son
because she is not capable of living on her own. My son is concerned
that he will be liable for the debt. I told him he is not responsible
for someone's else's debt even if they are related.

Am I right?

Yes, as long as he or his wife doesn't do somthing stupid to that makes them
liable. Borrowing from the old carpentry maxim, think twice, consult a
lawyer, and speak once.
