Payroll close period error

When I try to close the most recent payroll period I get the following error
message ...'Cannot settle a transaction where the total settlement amount
exceeds the amount due'...I really have no idea why this is happening. We've
not changed any of the settings nor done anything different from usual. Any
help would really be appreciated

desperate!
