Questions about expenses

I have a question about what is considered an allowable expense.

I cannot do my lawn, so I spend $80 month to get it done. Is that
allowable.

I have four dogs and spend $300-$400 each per year to have each
vaccinated and licensed and another $15 a month each for flea and tick
meds and another $15 a month each to feed them. Is this an allowable
expense?

I need a special diet to lose weight due to a severe medical
condition. Is the cost of all my food allowable?

The answer depends in great part on your trustee and the judge
appointed in your case. There are no absolute standards for these
things. I have listed all three of the expenses you discuss on
clients' schedules and have not had them challenged...but that
doesn't mean you won't.

Speak with your lawyer. He or she knows the trustees and should
be able to let you know whether you should expect any
difficulties.

The Small Print: This response is for discussion purposes only.
It isn't meant to be legal advice and you shouldn't treat it as
such. If you want legal advice, speak with a local lawyer
familiar with your state's laws who can review *all* of the facts
and the law applicable to your situation.

I have a question about what is considered an allowable expense.
Another issue: I am trying to put together a listing of expenses for a
Chapter 13 and am driving an 8 year old vehicle. This vehicle is
getting to the point of being unsafe to drive because of problems with
the steering. I tried to get it fixed recently but the mechanic said
it would need more work than I had budgeted for. The vehicle also
needs tires. The question is, can I get an estimate of the cost for
the work that needs to be done and for the tires and average that over
a year as maintenance for this vehicle? Otherwise how can I get the
court to take into consideration that I need to spend several hundred
dollars on this vehicle to make it safe to drive?

I suggest you calculate the amount of money you've spent on maintenance
during the last 12 months and divide by 12 to get an average monthly
expense for maintenance. When you value the car use kbb.com trade-in
values and check "poor" or "fair" for the condition.
