with more ISP's dropping "newsgroups",
for those that may not know they exist,
there is an online Quicken set of forums....

There are plenty of cheap ways to get newsgroup access outside of ISPs, and
I would encourage anyone to search them out.

There are differences between forums and newsgroups, not the least of which
is that forums are only available at the whim of the supplier, while in the
nature of newsgroups on usenet, the amount of censorship is minimal.

I wish there was an acceptable cross between the 2 breeds ...

There's a list of free newsservers here:

Notice most are text only and some don't allow posting.
My personal recommendation is Motzarella, you can sign up here, it's
completely free:
http://news.motzarella.org/

I STRONGLY suggest every one find a newsserver that suits them and sign
up, then start using it at least as backup because who knows when
*YOUR* ISP will drop newsgroups?

Having been on Verizon (now switched) who dropped their
newsgroups, I had found Motzarella as an interim. It worked very
well but there are hardly any groups represented and only about 2
binaries ;(
You're not going to fine many free newsservers that have binaries.

BTW, I don't consider more than 30,000 groups as "hardly any".

It carries all those that I want and more than 30,000 that I'm don't
want or need.

First it's the news servers, next it'll be the forums!

If you're ISP drops newsgroups *DROP THEM!!!* There is no better, nor
more effective, marketing disincentive than the heard of all your
customers walking out on you! Vote with your wallets people! That's how
the free market works! This is exactly the same principle that you
should apply to your financial institutions too! Otherwise you are just:

I have been satisfied with nntp.aioe.org since another user pointed me to
it. It allows posting.

Many (most ?) ISPs only connect to Newsgroups when you are signed on thru
the ISP which makes then not available when travelling. I am using
Cablevision at home which provides only a few access points around New York
City.
