Referral Tracking

Dear Users,
I have QB 2005 Basic. I need to be able to keep track of customer referrals.
For example, I work for John Smith and he then told 5 of his friends about
me and then they each call. I would like to be able to track who refers who.
I am starting a promotion that rewards referrals and I am afraid that it
will get ugly unless I can find good software to help. Is this possible with
Quickbooks 2005, or maybe 2006? Thanks!

Andrew- you would be better off doing this in a database program or a
spreadsheet would work also. If you have MS Office then you already
have Access and Excel.

The database doesn't have to be anything fancy. It sounds like all you
need is a 1-table database. Columns for Name, Referred By. ...and any
other pieces of info you want to track.

And no QB doesn't do anything like this.

?

!-!

I'm not certain about QB Basic, but all other versions have a "Rep"
field. It doesn't do anything automatic such as calculating
commissions, but it does permit "Sales by Rep" reports which may be
all that Andrew requires.

Open Lists, Customer & Vendor Profile Lists, Sales Rep List to create
new sales reps. If you plan to issue cheques to them you should
probably set them up as Vendors, otherwise I suggest "Other Names" (an
Other Name can later be changed to a Vendor if you wish, but a Vendor
cannot be changed to an Other Name). If you don't see the Sales Rep
List, then it's not available in Basic and you would need to upgrade
to a Pro or Premier edition.

You can assign a Rep to each Invoice individually, or assign a Rep to
each customer to have it automatically applied to all new Invoices for
that Customer.

I think this would be less work and more reliable than using a
separate database or spreadsheet.

Thanks for both of your input. I already have a database in Access for some
things and I could add another table/field that would do all that I need to
do. I have looked into the rep portion of QB but it appears that it would be
a painstaking process to make it work. Thanks again!!
