What error message if any?

a) can you open the sample.mny file - usually in the same directory as your
main .mny file

b) are you sure it is M2004 and not M2005 aka M14?

It sounds like the Money 2004 exe file had been updated. Thus the old
money file was running using a newer version of Money than the one that
was just reloaded. Thus when user re-installs Money, the first thing
that must be done is open some file (Sample or new) that was created
using the original version so that Money can ask for the update. What
Money needs to do is prior to opening a file check for updates. This
has been a feature that MS Money developers have not recognized a need
to handle.
