The us.* hierarchy guidelines envision that, at some point in time,
a committee would be formed to assume responsibility for the day-to-day
affairs of the hierarchy and to make necessary changes to the
guidelines.

The guidelines do not say anything about the size or composition of the
committee, or how it should be set up. This was intended to be at the
discretion of the hierarchy maintainer after discussions in us.config.
There have been some discussions in us.config, but no consensus was
reached. It is therefore my responsibility, as hierarchy maintainer, to
see that the job gets done.

This is a Call for Volunteers who would be willing to serve for not
more than one year on an Interim Committee for the us.* hierarchy for
the purpose of:

(a) reviewing the current guidelines and making necessary changes,
and
(b) writing additional guidelines for the formation of a Permanent
Committee.

The Interim Committee will consist of three persons selected by the
hierarchy maintainer. Any regular user of any us.* hierarchy newsgroup
may apply to serve on the committee. Technical skills are a plus, but
not necessarily required. The main qualifications are to have a basic
understanding of how Usenet works, a strong interest in the survival of
the us.* hierarchy, and a willingness to work with like-minded people
toward achieving common goals.

The Interim Committee will have authority to initiate discussions
within the us.* hierarchy and/or to conduct public opinion polls to
aid in the decision-making process. When the committee has finished
its work, the full package of guidelines will be presented to the
entire hierarchy for approval. And once the guidelines are approved,
the Permanent Committee can be formed.

Geoff Berrow of the UK Committee and I will act as ex-officio technical
advisors to the Interim Committee.

Interested parties should send an email to (e-mail address removed)
detailing their interest and qualifications for the job.
The easiest way to do this is simply to 'reply' to this notice, delete
the current text, and insert you own 'resume'.

Followups are set to us.config for those who may have questions.

The deadline is Saturday, March 12, 2005.

There is no monetary compensation.

Henrietta K. Thomas
us.* hierarchy coordinator
