RMS is VERY SLOW

Steve

I put RMS on a Pentium3 750 with 512mb of Ram windows XP SP2
and RMS CRAWLS....

I write custom applications and I run SQL Desktop Engine and VB applications
that process Web Orders from the database and they fly....
Does anyone know why RMS would be so slow.... when we scan an item it takes
2-3 Seconds (no kidding) to show up on the screen and keyboard response is
all delayed, when we cursor up or down through items on the screen....

Is MSDE running on the same system as RMS? If not, start looking at your
network first - possibly SP2 security settings as well.

Is this a clean/fresh RMS install, or do you have add-ins installed? Check
for programs running in the background. Is your processor or memory usage
getting pegged when you do an item lookup?

Yes MSDE is on the same PC, sorry I thougth that was implied when I said
other programs using the MSDE fly...

Yes it is a fresh and clean install with no Add-ins.

Nothing else is running, Norton anti-virus is on the system...

And when Adding Items or scrolling the PC (while very slow) does not seem to
affect the task manager performance meter at all...

While remote desktop'd into that POS it is idling at 5-9% usage, and adding
items and running up and down a PoS Sale with items does not move the
performance meter any.

And it is slow on the local Console, I am not speaking of RDP, I just wanted
to re-verify that I remembered Task manager showing all clear...

there's a pic... The Spike was me disabling NAV and still slow...

Thanks in advance for helping me look into this Glenn :)

Are you using the sample database, or 'live' data? How many items in the
database? Have you tried reindexing the DB from SO Administrator?

S

Steve

I am using a live database whihc was created by opening the empty database
from the install CD and using the import function to import items from
QS2000 Access DB.

1587 Rows are currently in the items table.

Yes I did a dbcc check and I re-indexed the database :(

The database seems to respond superbly when I am running enterprise manager
from my development PC, queries all execute and return quickly....

The customer and I both notice that there is a 1-2 second delay if you say,
click on the qty of an item, or the price column, and back, each time
anything re-focuses or when you scan a barcode it goes in then takes 2-3
seconds for the decription and price to show up... :(

Is RMS actually re-querying each item every time you change fields?

Each of those clicks is refreshing the recordset. You could try loading a
copy of the sample data just to see how that performs (it's got less data
for one thing and you can also compare the performance on other machines).
Based on your set up, it sounds like this is just the general speed of the
computer rather than any setup issue that's going to be solvable (eventhough
the specs fall well above the listed minimums).

Steve

Hrmm I loaded the sample Database. And it runs nicely....
ohh grr this is gonna be a pain isn't it?

S

Steve

Do you think I could import the data from one SQL DB into a fresh restore of
the blank DB, Maybe the Import from QS was flawed, and now that the data is
in SQL it might run properly?

S

Steve

Oh, I could scream...
All day since the beginning of this thread, until now...

I restored the blank database, re-imported all my items, and then as I went
through re-creating all my receipt settings...
RMS still runs decently...

I check pole Display on, and give it the OPOS name (Pole1) and bam, RMS
dies...

I guess there's some high level 2 way communication and RMS waits for the
serial pole display to respond instead of just spitting the text at the com
port and moving on sigh.

Anyways I am back on my 1st fully configured database with the pole display
unchecked and running fine :(

we run rms on a 1.2ghz machine along with pc-charge. the sql server needed
for the rms database takes up a lot of memory, and things got really slow
whenever the computer connected to headquarters. all of this is to say that
it's probably just the computer speed. don't trust that minimum requirement
stuff on the box; the computer needs to be much faster than that, especially
if you have to connect to headquarters often. all of the registers i've
bought since learning this (the hard way) are 2.8Ghz P4's with 512Mb RAM and
things run a lot smoother...

thanks,
kamal

No I found the problem was the pole display, when enabled RMS takes 1-2
seconds a re-focus to respond.
if I turn off the pole it runs smooth.
