Self Assessment Tax Calculation

S

SuzySue

When is the latest date I should receive from Inland Revenue, my Self
Assessment Tax Calculation for the '02-'03 tax year self assessment
form which I posted to be received by them before September 30th
deadline.

I have usually received the form by now. Is there a set date by which
I should receive this, or does it differ from Inland Revenue office to
office?

Doesn't necessarily mean they got it in time.

No

Yes

We've had calculations back for returns posted in early October :)

Cambridgeshire Area expects to have processed all returns received in
September by the end of November so the Area Director told me last night.

Thanks.

If I do not receive the calculation, should I request they send me
another full copy of the self-assessment forms. I do not have it now
as I posted it to them in September.

Can they send another full copy of the forms relatively easily.

They can - or you can download from the IR website.

But I wouldn't do that. Just ring your IR office (preferably armed with
your Tax Ref No or NI No.), ask if they've got the form. If yes, ask if
they've processed it yet. If yes, when can you expect the tax computation -
and better still, will they tell you the January 2004 figure over the phone.

If they haven't any record of receiving it, tell them it's all their fault
(quote posting date). But unfortunately you'll have to complete and send
another anyway - so make it clear you will need the calcs. to be done and
notified before end January.

All that said, I'll be very surprised if they haven't got it.

Thanks very much Martin, I'll get in touch with them and see what's happening.

They'll have it. They just won't know how to find it and not care.

I haven't phoned them yet, but I just received the "Statement of
Account" in the post this morning.

On it it mentions "Adjustment from SA return 18 Oct 03"; so this seems
to be a reference to the '02-'03 tax return which I posted to them.

So, I presume they must have received/processed the return.

It's strange though as I didn't receive the "Tax Calculation"
statement which is usually sent out before the "Statement of
Account".

My initial thought is that this is probably an adjustment to the Payments on
Account due 31/1/03 and 31/7/03, reduced now that actual liability for
2002/03 is known. (Assuming you did not claim to over-reduce the POAs last
year!)

You should get the "Tax Calculation" statement soon, but (assuming the above
assumption and nothing else unusual) you can probably assume your January
2004 tax charge will be equal to the revised POA payable 31/7/03. The
amount payable in Jan 2004 would then be this figure, less any overpayments
& interest b/f on your new "Statement of Account". July 2004 likewise, but
without the "overpayments" deduction. Assuming, of course, you have not
claimed to reduce POAs in 2004, which I assume you haven't since the Revenue
is doing the calculations.

Thanks; no I didn't claim to reduce POAs in 2004.

Does the "Adjustment from SA return 18 Oct 03" seem to indicate that
they have and processed the return? It seems to refer to the return I
sent in September. I guess they wouldn't have mentioned "SA return 18
Oct 03" if they hadn't received my return.

Do you happen to know if the Inland Revenue General Advice Helpline
Tel: 0845 9 000444 or the Payments Enquiries Tel: 01274 532007, would
know if my return was received? Or do I have to ring my local office?

Just wondered as I think the General Helpline is open on weekends
(though there's usually quite a queue).

Definitely. The date is just the date they captured ("keyed in" in old
speak!) the return. A bit after they got it, cos of end-Sept peak-load.

No - you would need to ring your own tax office. But unless you're
desparate, I suggest you wait a week or two. As they've sent the Statement,
the Calcs will follow shortly.

HTH - let us know when it arrives - or if it doesn't!

Object lesson - keep a photocopy next year :)

Thanks very much again Martin, really appreciated.

I suppose it'd be a good idea if in future I sent it by registered
post, then I'd know if they received the return.

Hopefully it'll get here next week....!
